WELCOME ASPIRING LICH

Welcome to the beginners section of the website. Here you will be given the best advice and guidance
when starting out as Vecna. This information will help you step into the fog with confidence.

VECNA BASICS - MAGICAL ITEMS

Before diving into strategies, it’s important to understand how Vecna works so you can make smart decisions during each trial.

Throughout matches, Survivors can find magical chests. Opening these gives them special items—magical artifacts that interact with Vecna’s spells. When Vecna casts a spell that matches a Survivor’s artifact, it reveals his aura to them, giving them a tactical advantage. Some artifacts are more dangerous than others. One group to watch out for: the Interlopers. Interlopers are tricky. When Vecna uses his Mage Hand ability, Survivors with this artifact get a speed boost, making it harder to catch them. To counter this, use Dispelling Sphere—Vecna’s anti-artifact spell. It temporarily disables their artifact effects, giving you an easier time in catching up. Two rare and powerful artifacts Survivors can find by rolling a D20:

Hand of Vecna
Lets a Survivor rush into a locker and get randomly teleported to another locker—essentially a free escape.

Eye of Vecna
Activates when a Survivor rushes out of a locker. They become invisible and gain a speed boost for a short time. Both artifacts injure the Survivor when used, but they offer strong escape tools. The Dispelling Sphere power will not deactivate the Hand or Eye of Vecna.
The
Eye of Vecna is easier to counter. If you know a Survivor has it and they’re in a locker nearby, wait for them to jump out—then grab them instantly and send them to the hook. Hand of Vecna is harder to deal with. If they teleport away, you can either: Scan generators to spread pressure. Follow their Killer Instinct trail and try to down them.

VECNA BASICS - SPELL CASTING

At the start of your journey it is important to understand the foundations of each Vecna spell, here we will go over the basics with some advice.

  • FLY

Vecna’s Fly spell is your main tool for fast movement. As a beginner, learning when and how to use Fly is key. Use it to quickly reach generators, close distance on Survivors, or reposition across the map. One crucial trick: cancel Fly just before reaching a Survivor. This causes Vecna to land directly on them, physically bumping them with your body. That collision can disrupt their movement and immediately set you up for an M1 attack as the Fly animation ends. Please note, you will be forced out of your spell if you use Fly through a vault or over a downed pallet.

  • MAGE HAND

Mage Hand is Vecna’s anti-loop spell. Use it to block pallets and control chase flow. When a Survivor runs toward an upright pallet, casting Mage Hand will summon a magical hand that holds the pallet in place, preventing them from dropping it. If the pallet is already down, Mage Hand will lift it back up. Timing is everything. To get the most value, cast Mage Hand just as you reach the pallet. This gives you the longest possible hold duration while you loop around, increasing your chance to land a hit. If you cast it too early—say, 10 meters away—the hand may release before you catch up, letting the Survivor drop the pallet on you. Beginner Tip: Always cast Mage Hand close to the pallet during chase. This maximizes pressure and minimizes escape options.

  • FLIGHT OF THE DAMNED

Flight of the Damned is Vecna’s main damage spell. When cast, it summons five undead skeletons that fly forward. If any of them hit a Survivor, they lose a health state. Cast Flight of the Damned as a Survivor vaults a pallet or window. Skeletons spawn at head height, so vaulting puts Survivors directly in their path. With good timing, you can punish vaults and secure hits. Survivors can crouch to dodge the skeletons. The Iridescent Book of Vile Darkness addon lowers their flight path to ground level—but reduces the number from 5 to 2. To offset this, you can use Ornate Horn, which adds 1 skeleton, giving you 3 ground-level projectiles. Beginner Advice: Start by learning the casting distance—how far skeletons spawn from Vecna. Once you master that, you can perform insta-spawn skeletons, casting them directly on top of Survivors for surprise hits. Avoid relying on the Iridescent Book early on. Playing without it helps you develop better timing, positioning, and advanced techs. This is something I developed over the course of my entire Vecna grind, from P0 to P100, now when I use the Vile Darkness addon I am 10x more lethal. There is more information on the Addons page.

  • DISPELLING SPHERE
Dispelling Survivors is a core part of playing Vecna. When you cast Dispelling Sphere, it disables any magical items a Survivor is carrying and triggers Killer Instinct—revealing their location, even if they’re hiding in lockers. Scout generators from a distance to check if Survivors are working on them. Use in chase to track movement or catch someone slipping into a locker. If a Survivor has the matching magical item, be cautious when scanning a distant generator as they might see the sphere coming and dodge it. Timing and positioning matter. Some addons modify how Dispelling Sphere works—check the Addons page for full details.

VECNA BASICS - HINTS & TIPS

Here are a few personal tips that helped me when I first started playing Vecna.

  • When I first started playing Vecna, I had to be okay with losing matches while I learned my spells and where to use them. Take your time, and don’t stress if you miss Flight of the Damned or mistime Mage Hand—it’s all part of the learning process. Vecna is packed with tech and utility, and he rewards players who invest time into mastering him. The better you get, the more confident you’ll feel—and the more fun you’ll have.

  • Start slow. A good tip is to focus on just two spells per match while you're learning Vecna. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, so keeping things simple helps. When I started out, I focused on Mage Hand and Flight of the Damned. That let me practice the timing of Mage Hand and learn when to cast my skeletons in the right situations. You can still use Fly for mobility, but keep your chosen two spells as your main focus. Once you’re comfortable with the basics, you can start working on the other two powers.

  • When you start learning Fly, especially on keyboard and mouse, make sure to use both your mouse and movement keys (WASD) to steer. Using them together gives you much better control while flying.
